Ramla Bay, Gozo

photo: The beach at Ramla Bay
On the northern side of Gozo, overlooked
by the village of Xaghra, is Ramla Bay. The wide sandy beach has a
red hue and is referred to by locals as 'Ramla il-Hamra' - The Red
Sandy Beach.
Overlooking the western side of the
beach is the famous Calypso Cave. According to tradition, this is
the cave referred to by Homer in The Odyssey. The nymph Calypso
lived in this cave and it is where she entertained the shipwrecked
Ulysses for seven years before he resumed his journey.
Other historical gems can be observed in
the environs of Ramla Bay. Roman remains lie beneath the sands and a
statue of Madonna and child sits in the middle of the beach.
