Property and real estate in Malta

photo: Residential area of Valletta

As with any property purchase, proper legal advice should always be taken and buying property in Malta is no exception. The complex tax laws and use of a Notary can be unfamiliar to many foreign buyers and there are numerous fees to take into account.

It is worth noting that there are some restrictions on foreign nationals owning property in Malta. For example, if you buy a house or apartment outside certain 'Special Designated Areas' you are limited to owning just one property at a time. There is also a set minimum you must pay for any property you buy in Malta. The rule was brought in to prevent locals from being priced out.

Property and real estate for sale in Malta is plentiful and 'For Sale' signs can be seen dotted around almost everywhere on the island. Before entering into any property deal in Malta do your due diligence, don't believe all the hype from the eager realtors and estate agents and remember...Caveat emptor!
