temples in Gozo
The Ggantija temples on the island of
Gozo are the oldest free standing structures in the world and the
oldest religious structures - pre-dating the Egyptian pyramids and
Stonehenge. Ggantija means 'belonging to the giants' in Maltese and Gozitan myths attribute the building of the temples to giants who
resided on Gozo island during ancient times. The temples are thought
to be over 5,500 years old.
In 1980 the Ggantija temples were made
an official UNESCO World Heritage site and restoration work still
goes on to this day.
