When hiring a car in Malta it is essential that you familiarise yourself with the driving laws in the country. In short, driving in Malta is a hair raising experience and should only be taken on by experienced, confident and defensive drivers. The roads are shoddy in places and speed limits are only adhered to when roads are crowded with traffic - another problem to deal with, especially in summer.
