Blue Grotto, Malta tourist information
photo: Shops close to Blue Grotto departure point
Blue Grotto is a popular tourist destination close to the village of Zurrieq in the south of Malta. A steep walk from the bus stop to the water edge reveals a small collection of cute gift shops and the odd place to eat, opposite a landscaped seaside area above the main departure points for boat trips.
The boats explore the caves and inlets of Blue Grotto, a natural feature created by thousands of years of pounding by the sea. Blue Grotto is well worth seeing and exploring but go in the morning if you can. The caves face the rising sun and the sea and minerals in the rock sparkle with colour. An early start also gives you an opportunity to beat the crowds, particularly in the high season when things can get cramped here.
The water can get very choppy in this area at any time of the year and boat trips are often cancelled. Make sure the weather conditions are suitable if you wish to explore the caves - especially if you're making the long bus trip from Valletta.
A boat trip is not the only way to discover Blue Grotto. Diving is also popular in this area because of the natural sponges that live under the waves.
