Mdina, Malta tourist information

photo: Entrance to the walled city

Mdina or 'The Silent City' is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is Malta's oldest city. The history of Mdina dates back over 6000 years with the city strategically placed on one of the highest points on the island - and one of the furthest from the sea.

Mdina is a virtually traffic free, relaxing distraction when holidaying in Malta. The high-walled interior offers an opportunity to shut off from the tourist hustle and bustle in most of the rest of the island.

Cathedrals, churches and narrow secluded streets typify the ancient mystical mood of Mdina. An unusual mix of Norman and Baroque architecture in the city stands as a testament to a turbulent past.
